In the heart of the Tyrolean Alps, the Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol is a magnificent retreat that offers an enchanting escape during the summer months. As you step into this luxurious establishment, you are greeted not just by the serene beauty of the surrounding mountains but also by the warm hospitality of its staff. Our arrival was marked by a seamless check-in process led by Sophie, a delightful Dutch receptionist whose cheerful demeanour set a positive tone for our stay and Costas, the Greek gentleman who parked our car with a smile. We were then escorted to our room by Csenge, a charming Hungarian who shared the highlights of the hotel.
The Room: A Touch of Nostalgia
While our accommodations at the Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol were not newly renovated, the Superior Room offered a certain charm reminiscent of Tyrolean heritage. The decor, though slightly dated, was infused with elegance, featuring a leather headboard, ample storage space and red furnishings that echoed the Tirol. The spacious room boasted a breathtaking view of the mountains, inviting us to sink into the plush bedding after a day of exploration. The amenities provided were adequate, ensuring comfort during our stay, yet I found myself yearning for the contemporary touches that a renovation might have brought.

Culinary Delights at Steinberg Restaurant
Dinner was a culinary adventure at Steinberg, the hotel’s signature restaurant. The restaurant manager, David, hailing from Croatia near Dubrovnik, warmly welcomed us, sharing his passion for the local cuisine. There, we indulged in a variety of dishes that celebrated the flavors of the Tyrol region.
To start, I savored the goat’s cheese with herbs and Tirol speck, a delightful combination that perfectly balanced the rich, creamy cheese with the savory, cured meat. Adam, as always, had the beef tartare, which was impeccably seasoned, showcasing the chef’s skill in highlighting fresh, quality ingredients.

A standout dish was the local sturgeon served with risotto. Its delicate flavors paired beautifully with the creamy texture of the risotto, making it a feast for both the palate and the eyes. For the main course, the beef fillet with goose liver flakes was a sumptuous affair, the richness of the liver melting harmoniously into the tender beef.
A Journey to Asia at Sra Bua
The following evening, we ventured to Sra Bua, the hotel’s Asian restaurant, where we were greeted by Vasiliki, a delightful Greek server whose enthusiasm was contagious. The non-alcoholic Pandan Sour served as a refreshing opener, while the lemongrass cocktail was an invigorating sip that perfectly complemented the warm summer evening.
To begin our meal, we were treated to milk bread with a soy, sesame and plum dip accompanied by prawn crackers and pickled daikon. This palate cleanser was both refreshing and tantalising, setting the stage for the unique dishes to come.

The foie gras sushi, encased in puff rice and topped with fresh truffle and a soy sticky sauce, was a revelation. It was as if the chef had reimagined the classic French delicacy in an innovative Asian context, creating a harmonious balance of sweet, sour, and salty flavors that left us craving more.
Next up was the crispy scallop, artfully presented and resembling a posh fried fish dish, enhanced by avocado and soy sauce. Each bite was a burst of flavor, leading us to anticipate the next course.

The pork dishes were a small burger-like presentation served on a bed of noodles and papaya, with a crispy cracker and liquid foam. The umami flavors danced on our palate, while the Wagyu fillet paired with a braised short rib was a carnivore’s dream. Slow-cooked for 18 hours, the usat were incredibly tender, served alongside asparagus and dehydrated pea, finished with a shisho pepper crèus that elevated the dish to new heights.
An Alpine Retreat: Spa and Relaxation
After a day of hiking through the stunning local trails, the Alpine Spa beckoned us for much-needed relaxation. The highlight was undoubtedly the outdoor pool, where sunbathing amidst the Alpine backdrop felt like pure bliss. The tranquil atmosphere provided the perfect escape, allowing us to unwind and recharge.

The spa offered a range of treatments and facilities, including saunas and a fitness center, but it was the serene ambiance of the outdoor space that truly captivated us. Lounging by the pool, I marveled at the picturesque landscape, the mountains standing tall against the clear blue sky.
Checkout and Farewell
As our stay came to an end, we found ourselves at the reception once more, this time with Raphael overseeing our checkout. His friendly demeanour and efficiency made for a smooth departure as I reflected on the wonderful experiences I had at Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol.

In conclusion, a summer visit to the Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol is an experience that transcends mere accommodation. It’s a harmonious blend of delightful culinary experiences, warm hospitality, and the stunning beauty of the Tyrolean Alps. Whether you’re seeking adventure in the great outdoors or a peaceful retreat in a luxurious alpine setting, this hotel offers an unforgettable escape that will linger in your memory long after you have left.
