Magical Escape to Tigh-Na-Mara on Vancouver Island: A Spa Retreat by the Sea

by Katarina Polonsky

Vancouver Island is full of hidden surprises, and Tigh-Na-Mara is one of its most enchanting. Nestled in the quiet coastal town of Parksville, where lush forests meet the Pacific Ocean, and wildlife wanders freely along the shoreline, this beautiful resort sits peacefully within nature’s embrace.

Tigh-Na-Mara

Tigh-Na-Mara — Gaelic for “House by the Sea” — is a place where the scent of cedar greets you in the morning and the gentle rhythm of the ocean lulls you to sleep at night. Both luxurious and low-key, it is the perfect destination for a rejuvenating weekend escape — or longer, if you can manage it.

Comfort Amidst the Coast

Located on the central eastern coast of Vancouver Island, just north of Nanaimo, Tigh-Na-Mara is surprisingly easy to reach. Close enough to the ferry terminal to feel accessible, yet secluded enough to feel worlds away, the resort offers the best of both convenience and tranquillity.

The air here is crisp and fresh, scented with the island’s ancient forests, while the rustle of arbutus leaves gently breaks the quiet. Occasionally, a bald eagle glides overhead; we counted twelve during our short drive from Nanaimo.

Thanks to Vancouver Island’s famously mild climate, locals can golf in January and beachcomb in June. Visiting in winter offers a particularly magical experience: mist drifts through the trees, softening the landscape and giving the entire place an almost dreamlike quality.

During our stay, the sun cut through lingering fog, casting a silver glow across the forest and shoreline. At times, it felt as though we had travelled far beyond Canada, rather than just a few hours from home.

A Resort Surrounded by Nature

The resort itself is expansive, stretching across beautiful coastal land beside the ocean. The main lodge houses the reception area, restaurant and fitness centre, while the accommodation is spread thoughtfully throughout the property.

Guests can choose from several charming options. Spa Bungalows offer secluded luxury, complete with fireplaces and deep-soaking tubs. Rustic log cottages nod to the resort’s 1940s origins and provide a cosy woodland retreat. I even spotted wild rabbits happily grazing nearby.

The Jedediah Studios combine comfort with modern style right on the water’s edge, while the Ocean View Rooms — where we stayed — sit in a separate building overlooking the sea. Walking through the grounds is an experience in itself. Towering trees, drifting mist, and the earthy scent of cedar create a calm, restorative atmosphere that invites you to slow down.

Our Ocean View Retreat

We arrived on a Friday afternoon after an effortless journey from Vancouver. Check-in was smooth, and within minutes, we were settling into our Ocean View Room.

To say the room was spacious would be an understatement. With its sweeping balcony overlooking the ocean, it felt larger than many apartments in Vancouver. A king-size bed sat opposite a cosy living area with a fireplace, while a luxurious jet-soaking tub added an indulgent touch.

The suite also included a fully equipped kitchen, dining table, sofa and coffee table — everything you could need for a comfortable stay. There was even a compost bin, a thoughtful nod to the island’s eco-conscious culture.

That evening, we ordered sushi takeaway from a well-reviewed local restaurant and enjoyed it with birthday champagne in the room. After a long soak in the tub, we stepped onto the balcony in our robes to admire the clear night sky. The fog had lifted, revealing a blanket of glittering stars.

A Morning by the Sea

The next morning began with fresh coffee and a peaceful run along the waterfront trail. The path stretches for kilometres through forest and along the beach, offering glimpses of the ocean through towering trees.

As I ran, I spotted a family of sea otters cracking open a crab, more bald eagles soaring overhead and hardly another person in sight. It was a spectacular way to start the day.

The Grotto Spa: A Sanctuary of Stillness

No stay at Tigh-Na-Mara would be complete without visiting its famed spa, The Grotto. Located just across the road from the main resort, this spa sanctuary features a mineral pool carved into natural stone, cedar barrel saunas, a whirlpool, heated pool and tranquil outdoor lounge areas beneath the forest canopy.

Guests are given plush robes and lockers before entering the spa’s relaxed, free-flow experience. There is no strict itinerary here — you simply move between the pools, saunas and rest areas at your own pace. We spent hours drifting between the mineral pool, sauna and fireside seating outdoors. By midday, the sun had emerged, illuminating the treetops while we relaxed beneath them. Sparkling infused water, herbal teas and small snacks are available throughout the spa, adding to the sense of quiet indulgence.

Dining in a Robe at Treetop Tapas

One of the most unique dining experiences at the resort is found within the spa itself. Treetop Tapas & Grill is exclusively for spa guests and invites diners to enjoy a gourmet tasting menu — while still wearing their robes and sandals.

It’s fine dining without the formality. No dress codes, no pretension — just exceptional food enjoyed in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Treetops Tapas and Grill Food

We opted for the chef’s tasting menu, a multi-course culinary journey inspired by the Pacific Northwest. Plate after plate arrived, each one more delicious than the last. Our charming server encouraged us to reorder our favourites — the tapas are effectively bottomless. By the end of our fifteen-course feast, accompanied by plenty of wine, we happily wandered back to our room in our robes under a sky full of stars.

Cedars Restaurant: Island Comfort Food

The following morning, we woke rested and slightly reluctant to leave.

For breakfast, we decided to stay at the resort and dine at Cedars Restaurant & Lounge. With its roaring fireplace and warm atmosphere, Cedars offers a more traditional restaurant setting while still maintaining the relaxed spirit of the resort. Executive Chef Eric Edwards, an island native, brings a passion for local ingredients to every dish.

I opted for a nourishing bowl while my husband chose pasta, both generously portioned and beautifully prepared. Like the resort itself, Cedars strikes a perfect balance between refined and welcoming.

Wild Encounters Nearby

Before catching the ferry home, we visited the nearby North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, a sanctuary dedicated to caring for injured wildlife.

It was a deeply moving experience. From bald eagles with damaged wings to ravens, crows and even pigeons, the animals here receive exceptional care from a passionate team. We also met a rescued bear who had been injured as a cub. Many of the animals are sponsored by Tigh-Na-Mara, something we had noticed when checking in. It’s always heartening to see a hotel actively supporting local conservation.

Bear

As we drove back toward the ferry terminal, we both agreed that leaving felt surprisingly difficult. Tigh-Na-Mara is more than just a resort — it’s a sanctuary of forest scents, ocean views and restorative calm. We arrived looking for rest and left feeling completely renewed. And one thing is certain: we’ll be back.
