The Athenaeum Hotel

by Emily Healey-Lynham

Attention to detail, superb comfort, and professionally addressing every need of an Atheneaum guest is what one can expect during their stay at this 5 Star hotel/residence. The hotel overlooks Green Park so very convenient for Mayfair, St James’s, and Knightsbridge. With its spacious new pavement terrace, its ‘living wall’ and its views over Green Park, it has a more refreshing, natural feel which would be lovely in the summer. I enjoyed a drink on the terrace and it is a great area for sitting watching people and enjoying the menu of tasty drinks on offer!

A few years ago, the hotel was refurbished from top to toe by Martin Hulbert Design however the bedrooms have remained the same. The ground floor has been remodelled by Kinnersley Kent Design with huge windows that let in the light and an area combines the restaurant, sitting area and stations for the staff, who magically appear when you need them!Guests can enjoy meals at the property’s on-site restaurant Galvin, which is run by Michelin-starred chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin, the menu offers afternoon tea and all-day dining options. The Athenaeum also has its own bar: THE BAR, which offers a cocktail menu, craft spirits and a whisky list. It was pleasant to sit here on a Friday evening enjoying a cocktail with ambient lighting and music at just the right level.

It’s not just the design that’s new, it’s the approach to service too. Gone is the reception desk; now friendly staff check in arriving guests in the lobby, the bar or as they go up to their rooms in the lift. This change somehow repositions the hotel from traditional five-star to boutique, modern five-star. The staff are particularly warm, natural and friendly. With its caring, inclusive attitude, the hotel is particularly suited to single guests – one lives here permanently with her dog!The spa onsite: REN spa offers relaxing treatments, a beautiful relaxation room, and wet area, here you can indulge yourself with bespoke REN treatments and personalised packages. They also offer a range of beauty treatments and finishing touches including manicures and pedicures to make you look and feel gorgeous. You can also find a well-equipped fitness room if you can tear yourself away from the sexy bar or amazing restaurant!

The room where we spent the night over looked the park; forty-four of the bedrooms at The Athenaeum Hotel overlook Green Park. They are spacious and we found their design practical with good lighting, mirrors, TV and funky hooded armchairs! The bathroom was sleek and clean and had all the little touches you need for a night’s stay.If you need more space, you can choose one of the luxurious apartments that occupy a row of Georgian townhouses next to the main hotel buildings, each with separate living, dining, and sleeping areas and tiny, fully equipped kitchenettes.

The breakfast the next morning was lavish with a great spread and attentive service. I thoroughly enjoyed the salmon and extensive choice of fresh juices and smoothies.

The stay overall was a great experience and having recently been to the Royal Albert Hall for an event, I stayed here again as the location is very handy and the hotel feels like a home from home with the great service, conferrable beds and relaxed luxury attitude.
