Last summer, I journeyed to the enchanting village of Gstaad, nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps. As I arrived, the lush green hills and vibrant wildflowers welcomed me, starkly contrasting the winter wonderland I had always associated with this charming destination. My first stop was the Golf Hotel, where I checked in and was immediately captivated by the stunning views from my balcony. The staff was warm and inviting, ensuring that my stay would be both comfortable and enjoyable.

That evening, I had dinner on the hotel terrace, a delightful experience as I savoured the local cuisine while soaking in the breathtaking mountain vistas. The sun dipped below the peaks, casting a golden hue over the landscape, and I felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over me. I knew that I was in for an unforgettable adventure.
A Day of Cheese and Fondue
The following day began with a visit to Dominik Matti, a local dairy farmer renowned for his artisanal cheese-making. I was eager to witness the traditional cheese-making process firsthand. Dominik welcomed me into his farm, where the air was filled with the rich aroma of fresh milk. He demonstrated the careful art of curdling and pressing the cheese, explaining each step with passion and pride. It was fascinating to see how much love and labour went into creating each wheel of cheese.

Afterwards, I made my way to the Cheese Grotto, a unique storage facility that showcased the region’s finest cheeses. The cool, dark space was lined with shelves of beautifully aged cheese, each telling a story of its own. I learned about the different ageing processes and the unique flavours that developed over time. This was not just a tour; it was an insightful journey into the world of Swiss cheese.

Lunch was a highlight of the day, as I enjoyed a fondue meal made from a fondue pack sourced from the local Molkerei in an actual wooden Fondue Pot! The bubbling cheese, served with crusty bread, was a mouthwatering treat. Sharing this meal with my fellow travellers brought a sense of camaraderie and joy, as we dipped our bread into the gooey goodness, laughing and relishing the experience.

An Afternoon at Lauenensee
After lunch, I set off for a hike around Lauenensee, a serene lake surrounded by towering mountains. The trail meandered through lush forests and vibrant meadows, the sound of a babbling brook accompanying my every step. I took my time, pausing to admire the wildflowers and the picturesque scenery. The tranquillity of the area was palpable, and I felt completely at one with nature.

As the sun began to set, I headed to Hotel Hornfluh for dinner. Here, I had the unique opportunity to experience a hotpot, a wooden hot tub situated outside with a changing hut nearby. As I soaked in the warm water, the sunset painted the sky in shades of pink and orange. With a glass of bubbles in hand, I couldn’t help but feel like I was living in a postcard. It was the perfect end to a day filled with adventure.
A Cultural Stroll Through Saanen
Saanen, with its rich history and stunning architecture, was a delightful discovery. I joined a guided tour that took me through the town’s charming streets, where I marvelled at the wooden chalets adorned with intricate carvings. Our guide shared fascinating stories about Saanen’s past, highlighting its significance as a cultural hub in the region.

I wandered into the local church, which boasted beautiful stained glass windows and a serene ambience. The architecture reflected the traditional Swiss style, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of reverence as I took in the surroundings. After the tour, I enjoyed a leisurely coffee at one of the local cafés, taking the opportunity to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this quaint town.
Exploring the Detox Valley, Abländschen
After my enriching visit to Saanen, I headed to the Detox Valley, known as Abländschen, a hidden gem that felt like a place untouched by time. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking scenery—rolling hills, lush pastures, and the sound of nature all around me. It was as if I had stumbled upon a secret paradise.

My first stop in Abländschen was a visit to a local beekeeper. I watched in awe as he explained the fascinating process of beekeeping, emphasising the importance of bees in our ecosystem. I had the chance to taste some of the freshest honey I had ever experienced, and it was a sweet reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

Next, I met a local craftsman who specialised in making Schindeln, traditional wooden shingles made from larch. The craftsmanship involved was impressive, and I found it fascinating to learn about the techniques that had been passed down through generations. Each shingle was a testament to the dedication of the artisans who created it.
The adventure continued as I visited a nearby farm, where I had the joy of meeting playful baby cows and goats. Their curious nature and playful antics brought an infectious joy to the day. I spent some time feeding them and soaking in the idyllic surroundings, feeling a sense of peace that only comes from connecting with nature.

My day concluded at a donkey stable in the village, where I met the gentle creatures that added to the charm of Abländschen. Watching them graze and interact with each other was a heartwarming experience, and I felt a deep connection to the serene beauty of this valley. It was a place where time seemed to stand still, allowing me to recharge and appreciate the simple joys of life.

A Night at Berghotel Zur Sau
After a day filled with exploration, I checked into the Berghotel Zur Sau for a night. This cosy hotel offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The rustic charm of the hotel made it the perfect retreat after a long day of activities.

The evening was spent enjoying a delicious dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, where I savoured local specialities that celebrated the flavours of the region. The ambience was cosy, and as I dined, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had already amassed during my stay in this magical valley.
Experiencing the Gstaad Menuhin Festival
As luck would have it, my visit to this region coincided with the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, a highlight of the summer season. This renowned festival, dedicated to the world of classical music, featured a series of incredible live performances in a beautifully designed tent located just a short walk from the town centre. The anticipation grew as I approached the venue, the warm glow of the lights illuminating the space.

Inside the tent, the atmosphere was electric. The audience buzzed with excitement as musicians prepared to take the stage. I settled into my seat, surrounded by fellow music lovers, eager to be transported by the melodies that were about to unfold. The performances were nothing short of magical, showcasing internationally acclaimed artists whose talents resonated with the audience who had come from far and wide.
The Contrast of Seasons
While I have always cherished Gstaad in winter, my summer visit opened my eyes to the village’s multifaceted beauty. The winter months are filled with the thrill of skiing and winter pursuits, as the slopes attract visitors from around the globe. However, summer offered a different kind of allure—one that emphasised the natural landscape and cultural richness of the region.

The warmth of the sun on my skin, the vibrant colours of blooming flowers, and the tranquillity of the alpine meadows created an atmosphere that was both rejuvenating and calming. The slower pace of summer allowed me to truly appreciate the beauty of my surroundings, and I found myself wandering without a care, soaking in the sights and sounds of nature.

As my time in Gstaad came to an end, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I had experienced the perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation, and I knew that this summer escape had deepened my affection for this remarkable destination. The memories of the Detox Valley of Abländschen, the breathtaking hikes, and the warm encounters with locals would stay with me long after I left. While Gstaad in Winter is exciting, I implore you to visit Gstaad in Summer to see a new and calmer side to this unique alpine region.
