When summer graces the Alpine landscape, few places capture the essence of relaxation and charm quite like the Relais & Châteaux Hotel Tennerhof in Kitzbühel, Austria. This remarkable establishment, with its rich history and unique character, stands as a testament to the early days of tourism in the Alps. From the moment you arrive, the allure of its antique Alpine furnishings and the warmth of its ambience envelop you, whisking you away to a simpler time.

Staying at the Relais & Châteaux Hotel Tennerhof

As you drive up to the Relais & Châteaux Hotel Tennerhof, the approach is as enchanting as the destination itself. The hotel is surrounded by established apple and fruit trees, their branches heavy with ripening bounty. This serene setting evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of a cosy home in the mountains from a different era. The tranquil atmosphere, with the stunning views of Kitzbühel below, provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful summer retreat. Upon entering the hotel, it’s impossible not to feel the history that permeates its walls. The furnishings, collected over a century, tell stories of generations past.

Our stay in the Kaiser Suite Maximilian was nothing short of extraordinary. This opulent space is a harmonious blend of tradition and comfort, featuring antique Alpine furniture collected over a century. The wooden floors exude warmth, while light linens drape elegantly over the plush furnishings, creating an atmosphere that is both cosy and timeless. The classic family lounge, complete with a crackling fireplace and inviting sofas, invites guests to unwind and soak in the hotel’s rich history.

The suite itself boasts stunning views of the mountains and the quaint town, providing a picturesque backdrop for a summer getaway. The attention to detail in the design reflects the family’s commitment to preserving the essence of the hotel while ensuring guests experience the utmost in comfort.

The Tennerhof boasts 39 unique rooms, each with its own story and character. This diversity adds to the charm of the hotel, ensuring that every guest feels a sense of individuality during their stay. The history of the building is palpable; since 1929, when the grandparents of the current owners purchased the guest house, it has evolved while staying true to its roots. Notable figures, including Ian Fleming, have found solace within these walls, adding to the allure of this quaint retreat.

A Taste of Nostalgia by the Pool

With summer in full swing, the outdoor pool becomes a focal point for relaxation. It invites you to slow down and savour the moment, whether you choose to lounge by the pool or in the garden on comfortable sunbeds. The outdoor bar, complete with charming parasols, transports you to a bygone era reminiscent of the 1950s. Here, you can sip a refreshing white wine spritzer and imagine the film stars who once enjoyed the same ambience.

Relaxation and Rejuvenation

A visit to the Tennerhof would be incomplete without indulging in some well-deserved pampering. Before my soothing massage with Andrii, a skilled practitioner who honed his craft in Thailand, I explored the wellness facilities. The sauna and steam room provided a perfect prelude to relaxation, and I particularly enjoyed the invigorating cold plunge pool. Various relaxation areas throughout the spa allow guests to unwind in quiet contemplation.

Andrii’s massage was a revelation. His skilled hands expertly located tight muscles and areas of tension, and his understanding of the body was evident as he worked through each problem area. The session was not only therapeutic but also educational, as he offered stretches to help alleviate discomfort. It was a truly personalised experience that left me feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rest of my stay.

Culinary Delights at the Relais & Châteaux Hotel Tennerhof

Breakfast at the Tennerhof was a delightful experience. The modern buffet offers an impressive spread, featuring an outstanding selection of pastries that will tempt even the most discerning palate. You can enjoy your meal in the classic dining room or, better yet, on the terrace, where stunning views of the Hahnenkamm and surrounding mountains create a picturesque setting. The local alpine cream served with your coffee is a must-try, adding a touch of regional flavour to your morning ritual.

Tennerhof Terrace

As the day transitioned into night, we found ourselves seated at a beautifully adorned table on the terrace, surrounded by blooming flowers and the scent of summer in the air. Tobias, our attentive server, guided us through a remarkable dining experience that showcased the culinary artistry of Tennerhof’s kitchen.

The evening began with an amuse-bouche—a delicate octopus ravioli paired with a luscious curry sauce and a crispy Parmesan garnish. This was followed by a starter of Corn Hamachi sashimi, which danced on the palate with its subtle ceviche flavours. The main course featured perfectly cooked beef accompanied by a rich potato purée, generously infused with butter—a decadent delight that left us savouring every bite.

Dessert was a masterpiece—a delicate tartlet filled with peach compote and topped with a refreshing peach sorbet, beautifully complemented by a sweet ice wine. Each dish was a testament to the chef’s skill and creativity, and the extensive wine list offered an impressive selection from around the world

As our summer sojourn at the Relais & Châteaux Hotel Tennerhof came to a close, we felt a profound sense of gratitude for the experience. We couldn’t help but reflect on the timeless elegance that permeates every aspect of this remarkable establishment. With its rich history dating back to the early days of Alpine tourism, the Tennerhof stands as a monument to the charm and grace of a bygone era, while seamlessly integrating modern luxury, making for a timeless retreat in the Tyrolean Alps.
